Growth in the church during the 1990's caused many of the members to look at how we used
the space we had and if it was adequate. In the 1950's a portion of the undercroft had been excavated
to provide a modest kitchen area and classroom space. With the growth it was clear that this was not
serving well and most room was needed. In 1995, several plans were studied and it was decided that
building a parish hall on the lot next to the church was the best option. By 1997, plans were drawn, funds
borrowed from the Diocese of Quincy and permission to start was optained. In August of 1997, the lot was
prepared and construction begun.
While many churches build additions, what made this efforts special was the the members had decided to to the work themselves.
During the many weekends and evenings that fall, groups of workers meet
and soon the building began to rise.
One saturday, with the help of a craine and many hands the roof began to take shape.
Within a few more weeks with winter approaching the outside work was "wrapped" up.
The cold weather outside didn't stop progress, the hard work inside kept things moving along.
And soon the inside began to take shape and the new kitchen neared completion.
