141. George Henry, III6 HOKE (George Henry, Jr.7, George, Sr.8) was born in Shelby, Kentucky 15 Aug 1826. George died 25 Oct 1907 in Elizabeth, Harrison Co., Indiana, at 81 years of age. * * * * * * * * The following is an obituary from the top of the front page of the Corydon, Indiana, "Democrat" (newspaper) of Wednesday, October 30, 1907: George H. Hoke Dies at Elizabeth at the Age of Eighty-One

Mr. George H. Hoke died at his home at Elizabeth last Friday at 10:50 o'clock A.M. after an illness of several months. Some weeks ago he received a stroke of paralysis and it was thought he could not survive, but he improved for a time and gained considerable strength. But this improvement in his condition lasted but a short time and a relapse at his advanced age proved too much for his strength. The funeral services were held Sunday at 10:30 A.M. at the family residence in Elizabeth, and were conducted by Rev. George Winn, of the M.E. Church, after which remains were taken to Rogers Camp Ground cemetery for burial. The deceased was in the eighty-second year of his age, and had spent his entire life within a few miles of where he died. He was united in marriage to Susannah Shreck, on June 5, 1851 and to this union ten children were born, four daughters and six sons. The widow and the ten children survive, the aged husband and father being the first one of the family to die. The deceased also leaves twenty-eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mr. Hoke was a man of rare intellectual powers. He was of an inquiring turn of mind, was a close student, had read many books and was well informed on numerous subjects. He was industrious, strictly honest, and possessed high ideals of life to which he made his daily conduct conform. He was for many years a minister of the gospel in the Dunkard Church, to the only congregation of that denomination in this county. He was a good man in the highest sense of that term, and never failed to impress upon others his convictions as to our highest duties in life both to our fellows and to our Creator. He was our neighbor and friend. Our families lived on adjoining farms for many years, and our relations were intimate and pleasant. We extend our tenderest sympathy to the relatives of the deceased.
