234. Matthias, Jr.7 MOUNT (Matthias Sr.8, Thomas9, Ezekiel10) was born in
nr.Louisville, Shelby or Oldham, Kentucky 7 Aug 1810. Matthias, died 23 Dec 1887 in Dillon Township, Tazewell,
Illinois, at 77 years of age. Mathias Mount from the Old Settlers Section of the Combined Plats and Atlases of Tazewell, County,
Illinois of 1864,1873,1891 MATHIAS MOUNT is one of the early and well established citizens of Tazewell county. He
was the eighth child and seventh son of Mathias and Ann Mount, and was born in Shelby county, Kentucky, August7th, 1810. When he was
sixteen years of age his parents moved to Washington County, Indiana, where he engaged with his father to clear land and improve a farm, and
remained at home and labored for his father until he was twenty-one years old, and then emigrated to the State of Illinois, made his first
stop in Jacksonville, where he engaged to labor for William Stevenson for one year, for which he was to receive one hundred dollars. At the
close of the year he took a contract to maul rails, make stakes, and build a good fence around eighty acres of prairie land, for which he
received fifty dollars. With these two sums of money he entered eighty acres of first quality of land in Tazewell county. In the year 1832,
at the time of the Blackhawk war, and when they were raising volunteers, he volunteered his services and enlisted in the first regiment and
third brigade, under Gen. James D. Harris, of Springfield, and served in active service one hundred days. He first enlisted as a private,
but it was not long until he was, on account of good ability and valiant patriotism, promoted to first lieutenant, which honorable position
he held until the close of the war, when he received an honorable discharge and returned to Jacksonville, and engaged to labor on a farm for
$10.00 per month. Here he remained several months, and then came to Tazewell County and made some improvements on his eighty acres, on
section twenty-five, in Mackinaw Township. He then returned to Indiana to visit his parents and relatives, and in the spring of 1838
returned to Tazewell County, and engaged as a laborer, to cut timber and maul rails for fifty cents per hundred, and board himself. He
saved enough money at making rails, in two years, to enter over six hundred acres of as good land as Mackinaw Township contained.
In 1885 he engaged as head sawyer in a saw mill then known as Stout's Mill, where he received seventy-five cents per day and twenty cents
per hundred feet for all he would saw after night. In this capacity he remained for two years, at the end of which time he had saved
several hundred dollars. About this time there was a colony settling in and around the town of Tremont, and there was a good demand for
lumber, but at the close of two years Mr. Mount had become tired of working for other parties, and began to make improvements on his own
lands.
On the 31st of May, 1836, he was joined in matrimony to Miss Ann L. Broughill, who was born in the State of Tennessee, in the year 1871,
and was moved with her parents to Illinois, and settled on Tennessee Ridge, Tremont Township, Tazewell County, in the year 1830, where she
received her education at the very few schools that were then in the country. Immediately after their marriage he moved his wife to his
valuable farm, where be had prepared a comfortable home, and engaged in improving land and farming, and was prosperous until the year 1840,
when the hand of affliction was laid on his family, and after a short, but severe illness, his wife departed this life, leaving him with one
infant child who survived its mother but a few months. After the loss of his wife and child he again made a visit to his friends and
relatives in Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia, and in the spring of 1841 returned to big property in Tazewell County, and engaged in farniing.
In 1843 be was again married to Miss Abigail C. Orendoff, daughter of Aaron and Martha Orendoff, who was born in the State of Kentucky in
1828, and came with her parents to Illinois in 1827. Mr. Mount still continued to carry on farming and succeeded well until June, 1853,
when Mrs. Mount second was called from him, leaving three Jessie, Jane, and Martha, and it became Mr. Mount's duties to provide for the
comforts of his children, and after procuring good and suitable homes for them, he took an exploring trip through several of the southern
states, and was absent until the spring of 1854. He then returned to his children and property, and set to work to improve a large and
valuable tract of land he had previously purchased in section twenty-five, Dillon Township.
On the 23rd day of July, 1854, he was for the third time joined in marriage, and this time to Miss Eliza Jane Bennett, who was born in
Tazewell County, Illinois, September 16th, 1832. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. Mount moved his wife and his three former children to
his new home in Dillon township, where he has lived, enjoying all the comforts this life affords, ever since. Mr. Mount has been one of the
extensive and successful farmers of Tazewell County, and has, perhaps, done more hard, exhausting labor, than any other man now living in
Tazewell County. The fruits of his three marriages have been six children, three sons and three daughters. One child died in infancy, and
five are living at home.
Mathias Mount is one of the heavy property holders and wealthy citizens of Tazewell County, and it is all the legitimate products of his
own labor and good economy. We know of no citizen who stands higher in the scale of respectability, in his community, than Mr. Mount.
Although his education is limited, yet, owing to his good ability and sound judgment, he has been a very useful citizen of Tazewell County,
and has very frequently been urged to accept and hold many of the most important offices in the gift of his many warm friends. In 1866 he
was chosen to represent Dillon township in the board of supervisors of Tazewell county, and has been urged to hold and fill that honorable
position ever since. And it is his highest ambition at all times to discharge his every duty to the best advantage and interest of his
constituents. He is well and favorably known for his liberality and charity to all moral and benevolent enterprises, and is ever ready and
willing to aid and assist all poor and needy persons whom he deems worthy of his benevolence. * * * * * * *
